“Dorn a’n Mor” (pronounced dorn ah-n mor) is a Cornish phrase meaning “Hand from the Sea.” It reflects the soul of what I do, giving a second life to rope reclaimed from the Newquay fishing fleet. Each piece in the Tide-Worn Collection begins its journey on the Atlantic, where it once hauled lobster pots or fishing nets along the rugged Cornish coast. When that rope comes ashore, salt-worn and strong, I handweave it into sustainable homeware that celebrates both resilience and renewal.

Cornish homes have always been places of practicality and purpose. A well-worn rope mat wasn’t decoration, it was a tool, used daily to scrape away harbour mud before stepping inside. A handwoven basket wasn’t an ornament, it held logs, nets, or the day’s catch. I honour that tradition in my work. Each design is rooted in function first, beauty second,  though, I believe, one can’t truly exist without the other.

A good friend of mine, Dan, is a Newquay fisherman whose days rise and fall with the tide. Watching him work, his hands steady, his patience unhurried, reminds me that true craftsmanship comes from rhythm and respect. The same rope that once tethered his lobster pots now threads through my hands, finding a new life in homes far from the sea. When I began Lovan Cornwall, I wanted the name to honour that heritage. Lovan, an old Cornish word for rope, felt fitting — a link between past and present, function and beauty, maker and sea. Every basket and doormat I create is tied to that idea of connection, not only between materials and maker, but between Cornwall’s history and its future.

Sustainability has always been a part of Cornish life. Fishermen repaired nets, families mended clothes, and nothing was ever wasted. I carry that same philosophy into my work. Using reclaimed materials isn’t a marketing choice, it’s a way of life.
